Chapter 26
Emilia
Something warm pressed against my back and strong arms pulled me closer. I let out a satisfied moan and snuggled into his body, relishing the comfort that came with it. As he pressed his face into my neck, his hair fell forward and tickled my face. When I opened my eyes, chocolate brown hair was draped over me and I gasped, shoving away from him and sitting up straight.
âWhat the fuck?â
He followed, reaching out a hand to grip my elbow. âIâm sorry,â he said immediately. âKade told me I should just come lay with you and I thought that was weird, but also⦠you looked really fucking cute.â
âKade⦠what?â
Alden pursed his lips and ran a hand through his hair. I tried to remember what had happened earlier, but all I recalled was taking something to help me sleep, racing up the stairs, and cuddling with Kade.
There certainly hadnât been any mention of inviting Alden into my bed. We hadnât even spoken in a week and after everything that had happened, I hadnât expected to talk to him ever again.
âYou gave me an ultimatum,â I remembered.
He let out a long breath and nodded, his eyes never leaving mine. âIt was a dick move.â
âYeahâ I agreed.
He looked at me for a while, then took my hand in his. âWine while we whine?â
I bit my lip, remembering our ritual from college. Whenever we were having a bad day or something happened, one of us would suggest having wine while we hung out and bitched about our problems. The copious amounts of wine usually turned it into either a crying or laughing session.
As if he could read my mind, he reached around to the nightstand and held up a bottle of Riesling. Shaking my head, I leaned back against the headboard, and he joined me. The wine was already uncorked, so he brought it to his lips and took a swig, then passed it to me.
âYou got the cheap stuff,â I noted, a full body shiver traveling through me when I took my drink.
âItâs tradition,â he chuckled.
âSo, letâs circle back to Kade telling you to hop in bed with me.â
He laughed, a full-bodied sound I hadnât heard for too long. âHeâs a really strange person.â
âHeâs eccentric,â I corrected. âHeâs just⦠free.â
âHe came to my house.â
My eyebrows shot up. âWhy?â
âTo point out that Iâm an idiot.â After another drink, he continued. âI thought he was going to beat the shit out of me for sleeping with you. Instead, he told me that we needed each other and I was fucking it all up. Iâm paraphrasing, of course.â
âSo basically, Iâm scaring the shit out of him right now.â
âActually, I think heâs well-equipped to handle you.â He pinched the bridge of his nose. âHe even told me all about your insatiable hunger for him.â
I wrinkled my nose. âMy hunger? Oh. Oh!â
âYeah,â he said, drawing out the word. âGuess he needed to strike at me, even if it wasnât with his fists. And I suppose I deserved it.
